I’m not really sure what I end up eating. For example, I saw this bird leg in front of me today and I asked the nice lady behind the counter, who speaks only German btw, “What is that?” She replied something in German and then followed that up by saying “Chicken”. Now I know that whatever was in front of me was not chicken. I mean chicken and I go back a long way and I have friends who are literally fans of my chicken eating skills (I miss Broast). She’s done this before though. She translates any fowl as chicken to me, the last time it was turkey and this time apparently it was duck. It didn’t taste too bad, but it was no chicken. I eat beef and pork regularly now, adapting to the country nicely in that way. I even think I had deer meat in the office restaurant once, at least that’s what Google translated the dish name to. However, a few weeks back, I just couldn’t get myself to eat the rabbit meat on the menu. Somehow imagery of Bugs Bunny on my plate dissuaded me. I chose the safer option instead…yup – chicken.

Nope...didn't work

The medicines didn't do their job. I hate it. I feel all drowsy, tired and sleepy and I have so many documents to read and so many decisions to take at work!! Somehow, a cold gets me down more than a fever or a sprain or something like that.

Germany is a very procedure oriented country. Nothing seems simple out here. Even my German friends and colleagues keep complaining about it; and especially if you don’t know the language, you’re done for. All official communication is in German and there is at least one a week. For example, my insurance company sends me a form to fill. I have no clue on what to do. I tried going to Google, typed out the whole thing, translated it and figured out at the end that I really don’t know how to answer what they’ve asked. While this maybe a one-off case, and generally if I translate, I should be able to respond with something. However, it just seems simpler to go to their office and talk to the nice English-speaking gentleman and get it sorted out. So the weekend begins with a trip to the insurance company.

Next week is going to be long and hectic at work. Just hope the medicines start doing the work their supposed to on my UC. I’m losing weight by the day and it doesn’t help at all to see so much blood go from your body!! Note to self: live with it and fight through - a better day will come!

..........

If I were to represent my personal life as a graph, I am at a point where I can either make an inflexion, or carry on the same trajectory. If I further split the graph into two curves, one for me and one for my life – the last few days have indicated to me that my curve will undergo the inflexion while my life curve will most likely go on the same trajectory. Was what happened a life changing event? I don’t know. But it sure has changed things. I seem to be on the right path where acceptance of reality is becoming second nature and the rebel inside me is slowly but surely going away. Peace and calm is all I want – at any cost. The final outcome is not under my control and I don’t want to control it, I just to control the path I take, for the good of everyone involved.
On the physical side of things, after 3 months of bliss my UC problems are back. Damn you chili chicken 65 masala. I just got overconfident, when I wasn’t even completely confident that I was in remission. Anyway, it’s going to be a constant companion for life, making unannounced appearances and reluctant disappearances; so might as well accept it better than I’ve done in the past. Unwanted weight loss – here I come.
Barca are showing promise!! He has set the benchmark for a wicketkeeper batsman and I'll be surprised if ever there was someone close to him again. While it is mostly exciting to watch all the Australian batsmen in test matches, Gilchrist was the man I used to wait for. I still remember his 152 against England on his Ashes debut, especially because he added 63 runs for the final wicket with Glenn McGrath in 8 overs and he scored 62 of those. To me, he was a more consistent "Michael Jordan of cricket" than even Sachin (although I love Sachin more), and by MJ of cricket I mean, someone who can single-handedly take the game away from the opposition, someone who gives sports lovers goose pimples, someone who defines the very reason I watch sports. The conversion process was slow and steady and now it's complete after our 12 day trip to three far eastern countries - Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. While I mostly have only good things to say about the latter two countries, the outright highlight of the trip was the 5 days we spent in Thailand. Malaysia and Singapore are great cosmopolitan countries but I've seen nothing quite like Thailand. I mean it has an identity of its own. Everything is so open!! Do what you want, where you want, how you want, when you want and so on. The culture coupled with all the amazing water sports, the Tiffany's show, the cheapest stuff (their attention to detail in replicas of international brands is excellent), the beauty of their Buddha temples..all led to a jaw dropping experience. The only downer was the smell of the food. While I consider myself quite tolerant of sights and smells of all sorts of food, the smell of Thai food completely knocked me out, the sight of it I was still OK with. After asking around, we found the smell to be caused by fried garlic, but I still think there is something else to that smell. Someday I'll find out. Oh! and the unusually high water level in their commodes was also weird!! In all we visited Bangkok, Pattaya, Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Lagoon, Genting Highlands and Singapore.

This was a nice moment in Safari World and Marine Park in Bangkok. The tiger was literally just one big pussy cat. He kept adjusting my hand with his left front paw, so that he may drink the milk right. I completely loved holding him.

This statue at Marine Park kept cracking me up. This kind of defines Thailand's spirit in a way. Every time someone walks past the statue, 2 jets of water would squirt on that person. Look closely at the picture to see the jets of water squirting.

The Orangutan, Sea-Lion, Dolphin and "James Bond" shows were good fun. We managed to walk in one of these alleys in the night market. There were quite a few excited "businessmen" trying to sell us a good time through live beer shows or DVD sex!! We didn't take up the offers, so we'll never know what either of them constituted, but I'll never forget the one pimp who on seeing us, went "AAAHHH!!! I can see it in your eyes. I know what you want. Ok!! C'mon C'mon" Talk about a pull marketing strategy!!

Walking Street in Pattaya was the experience of a lifetime. We had never seen anything even remotely close to it. While the streets in the night market in Bangkok had a shady red light area feel to it, this street was so brightly lit and teeming with life and every other shop was a beer bar with special offers lined up. I couldn't wipe the grin of my face when walking through this street, cos I had never imagined something like this existed. The Tiffany Alcazar show was like watching a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie live with so much colour and gigantic sets and it was performed entirely by (as our local Thai guide put it) boy-ladies. Yes, the "girls" in the pic were men once upon a time.

The adventure sports in Pattaya were also great. Para-sailing is totally awesome, especially if you do it with a dip in the water included. The under-water walk and jet-ski ride were also good fun. The beach in Coral Island was beautiful, but unfortunately, we spent too little time there.

The most impressive thing about KL was the street decorations. Sunway Lagoon was enjoyable with the artificial beaches and water rides. Genting Highlands was impresessive and Prasi and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in our first visit to the huge Genting Casino. We ended up playing only slots for about 4 hours but it was something we'll never forget. The cable car ride down from Genting was pretty scary considering the speed at which the car was travelling.

The highlight of our trip to Singapore was the Songs of the Sea show in Sentosa Island with brilliant laser lights on the beach. No picture can do justice to just how spectacular the show was. We did not get a chance to experiece the night life, so I guess our Singapore experience is still incomplete. So one more visit to Singapore is pending.

I’ve watched 7 movies over the last 4 weeks. A quick thought post on them. As a movie watcher, I look purely for entertainment. Logic and realism don’t matter to me, unless it’s outrageously stupid or completely unnecessary!!

1. Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End:
a. +ves – Great Effects; Sword duel between Sparrow and Jones; Depp hilarity
b. –ves – Calypso’s “Dude where’s my car monster girl” act; the story was confusing until I read it on Wikipedia after watching the movie!!
c. X factor – Chow Yun Fat in a different role, haven’t seen much of him but always associated him with being Hong Kong’s Vijayakanth!! Not quite Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee but up there
d. My Entertainment Score: 3/5

2. Ocean’s 13:
a. +ves – Same relaxed atmosphere as 11 and 12; the “see you when I see you” joke right at the end
b. –ves – not nearly as funny as 11; for a monster villain, Al Pacino was defeated too easily
c. X factor – Ellen Barkin, I had a huge crush on her when I was 15 after seeing her in The Big Easy. She’s 53 now!!! You could never tell looking at her in the movie.
d. My Entertainment Score: 2.5/5

3. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom:
a. +ves – Lara Dutta
b. –ves – Everything else in the movie. Preity is theoretically a 16 year old girl who falls in love with modern DVD and human trafficking pirate Abhishek because he is oh sooo romantic, and the Usual Suspects’ climatic “everything becomes clear” rip off was hilarious (meant in a completely derisive manner)
c. X factor – Again, Lara Dutta pulled off the French girl act so very naturally…surprisingly…definitely much better than IIISAAA JADOOO DAAALLLaAA RAYYYYYYY
d. My Entertainment Score: -0.5/5 (yes, negative)

4. Shrek The Third:
a. +ves – Puss in Boots, Pinocchio’s long winding dialogue
b. –ves – not as entertaining as 1 and 2
c. X factor – It’s the Shrek franchise…the concept never gets old on me
d. My Entertainment Score: 3/5

5. Cheeni Kum:
a. +ves – Great movie, the little girl, Tabu-Amitabh
b. –ves – Lot of people felt the second half was too melodramatic to justify the first, but I found it quite ok actually…so no real negatives
c. X factor – Ilaiyaraaja’s BGM, he is truly the master. I had the opportunity to listen to Balki(the director), when he was still an ad-man, at IIMK a couple of years ago, it was then that I knew he was a huge fan of Ilaiyaraaja. Then when I heard “Mandram Vandha” in Hindi for a movie named Cheeni Kum, the dots seemed to connect and it all lit up when I saw the name of the director in the poster
d. My Entertainment Score: 3.5/5

6. Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer:
a. +ves – Totally relaxed movie with fantastic effects, perfect movie to have fun and only have a smile and no other feelings at the end of it all; The small segment with Stan Lee not being allowed to attend the wedding was funny
b. –ves – nothing!!
c. X factor – Comic book flicks are always a delight for me
d. My Entertainment Score: 4/5

7. Die Hard 4.0:
a. +ves – McClane’s the man!!! Awesome action movie after such a long time
b. –ves – The movie was not as funny as the first 3 parts, but I guess this was due to the censorship of the expletives…nothing beats McClane mouthing sarcastic four letter words to the money mad lunatics who can only be stopped by…John McClane!!
c. X factor – Everything about it blew me away!!
d. My Entertainment Score: 4.5/5

Season to forget...in review

How many times in life have you been pondering over superfluous questions like “what could have been?”, “if only….” or maybe the idiom “so near yet so far”!! Well, it has been a season of these for my beloved Barça, a season which began with so much hope and optimism, a season which could have been unprecedented in our history, 7 titles!!! “World Champions”, “Greatest team in history”…ah…all that is but a distant dream now!! Coming into the season as Champions League winners and two time La Liga champions, having the most fearsome attacking trio in world football, and a defense which had finally learnt the art of being miserly in crucial situations, and as mentioned, 7 trophies to fight for, to end the year winning only 2 (not to mention, the least important ones) of them, has really crash landed me and all the faithful blaugrana supporters. Disappointing as it is, the dominant feeling I, and most of the Barça faithful including the “faithful” players, have is a lingering sense of disbelief. How can we have the best attack by far, in terms of number of goals scored, the joint best defense, only 33 conceded, and still not win the title hands down? Well, agreed we were caught with our pants down too often in critical moments this season. Player ratings now:

Valdes – 7, got better this year, stayed on the line more often than dance around like a clown in the area, a couple of near post blunders, definitely one of, if not the best, shot stoppers in the world, hopefully will get better…stay
Jorquera – Played too little, but whenever he did play, seemed to concede goals by the buckets
Zambrotta – 4, So much hope on this guy, was supposed to strengthen one of the two weak area in the team, a perfect signing, well he kinda flopped…with rest and some preparation, hopefully will fulfill what we expect from him…stay
Beletti – 4, One of the weak points of last season, he did not play much this year, and he did not look too bad when he did play, but still doesn’t add to the strength of the team….go
Oleguer – 3, lot of mistakes, slow, was better at right back last season…go
Puyol – 6, my hero, looked probably the worst I’ve ever seen him, please get back to old form…no question..our captain..stay
Marquez – 2, he was slipping more and lying flat on the ground rather than running around and making crucial tackles…what a contrast to last year, when he was so solid….really don’t know if he should go or stay…will he get back to form? If he does, he’s one of the best in the world
Thuram – 6, good game, bad game, good game, bad game…looked really solid in all his good games…anyway I suppose this will be his last season…so can stay, gives good experience…but hope he doesn’t complain about playing time and give the coach a headache
Gio – 4, The weakest link last season, looked better this year…same case as Beletti…go
Sylvinho – 4, I like this guy, but go
Edmilson – 2, Very few good games, and that too when he came on as a substitute…a definite must go
Motta – where was he?? Can be so good, but learning too many bad habits and starting to look like Edmilson….looks like he’s gonna go, but I wish he would stay and the staff works on him
Xavi – 5.5, Not the same since the injury, looked back to his best in a few games here and there, but needs to control the game more and keep hold of the ball like he used to….stay
Iniesta – 8, Player of the season for us according to me, only one to look good when everyone seemed to have lost form, still doesn’t give the De La Pena killer through balls though, needs to be played in a position suiting his skills to fully utilize all his talents….stay
Deco – 4, Biggest disappointment of the season for me, gave so many balls away it was untrue, had a couple of good games here and there, made a few goals, but now seems to be living more on reputation than on performance. For all his skills, what appears to be a sheer lack of desire and commitment is seriously hurting us. Heart says stay but head says go…and I want to listen to my head
Giuly – 4, Played quite a bit due to Messi’s injury, was very ineffective, missed some open goals, I like him and there was a time when he scored every other game, but not doing too much now, go
Messi – 7, Injured for a long part of the season, showed he is ready to become the best player in the world, gave moments of joy for us. Now, If only he can keep himself fit. Future of the team, I wish he stays for many, many years to come
Ezquerro – Played too little to be commented upon, should leave for his own good
Gudjohnsen – 5.5, Replacement for Henrik, I believed he was the ideal man for the job. Didn’t play as much as he would have liked, I believe he was made a scapegoat for the team’s failures. He did not play all that bad, could have been better. I want him to stay…but looks like he will be made to go.
Saviola – 5, Was in good form in the middle of the season, but somehow, even though I like him, he is from the dark years, he’s decided to go and I’m not too sad, really don’t want to feel anything about it!!
Ronaldinho – 6.5, Much has been written about his performance this year, to the extent, his weight also came into question. Yes, he is not the same Ronaldinho of last year. He’s lost his acceleration and pace, maybe due to a lack of desire and commitment after winning everything last year. He was not as bad as people made him out to be, huts not as good as everyone wanted him to be. He had some bad games early on where he was non-existent. However, he did score 20 odd goals!! He did produce his moments of magic, but they were more of a standing and great pass variety than beating four defenders with scorching pace. Have we sent he best of him?? I’m not sure, he’s too young to be finished. I still hope, I hope he stays and he is the global symbol of our club, which is important also.
Eto’o – 6, why does he have such a head? He is probably the most important weapon in our attacking arsenal, but he has such a nose for trouble, it’s unbelievable. Probably the dressing room problems that were created by our man were a major cause of the season that was. How do we control a loose cannon like this? He seemed to have changed, but now everyone is wary of him. I can only hope he adopts Buddhism and calms down. I’m really grateful to this guy for the number of goals he’s scored over the 2 magical years…yes grateful. He is the greatest striker in the world without a doubt; I pray he brings positive energy to the team if he stays next year.
Frank Rijkaard – 5, I respect him, he has been a major part of the turnaround, but I’ve always maintained that tactically, he is not that great. His man management skills were his forte, but this year, that too has suffered some major blows. Neeskins is not anywhere near Ten Cate. He tried the 3-4-3 and surprised Zaragoza, but why do it against Real with Oleguer at the back?? Don’t want to him to stay or go, completely undecided on him.

Some thoughts on people we’re looking to sign and youngsters:
Henry – Didn’t want him to come last year, still don’t know how his ego will fit in, If Eto’o or Ronnie go, it might be good if he comes.
Chivu – Don’t know how good he is. Setting the ones whose address is not recognized by the postal department of any country aside, and the Gods suffixed with "men" and "women" also aside, there are still a few hundreds left. These Gods dominate our everyday influences which determine what we eat and drink, the way we walk, talk and act, our emotions and ideas of love and life in general and also provide fodder for hours of conversation and debate. What do these Gods do?? Movies and entertainment, politics, sport!! Growing up in an society that worships its heroes, and in an era that had people not being satisfied with your average next door God, and expanding their God-radar to include international figures, I had my own entertainment/sport-God list, and my Gods of rock music were in town on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 to quench the thirst of a 15 year wait.

It's been 10 years since they professed to love the sweet taste of India, and when they finally decided to take the plunge and sample it first hand, I just had to be there!! Waiting for the show to explode and the band to appear on stage, I kept telling myself to get a grip and that I have waited for 131490 hours to see this, what’s in a couple more? Then, it happened!! The lights went out, the screen lit up and the Aerosmith logo engulfed the world leading up to a fluttering tri-colour of saffron, white and green, which made the crowd go crazy and pop in approval. As expected, the Gods started off with “Taste of India”, and then the as they say, the rest was history. I always get pumped when I hear “Dream On”, but listening to it live makes me calling it amazing an understatement. Alicia Silverstone lit up the giant screen as they power ballded “Cryin” and had the crowd eating out of their hands. Amidst all this, Tyler did not fail to perform his nefariously delightful antics with ejaculating water bottles from the hip down, giving the middle finger to Kramer during “Falling in love is so hard on the knees”, or revealing his lick me tattoo in a convenient place. It all concluded with their more commercialized, but nevertheless awe-inspiring “I don’t wanna miss a thing”. One unforgettable goose-bumpy evening I went later, the only regret I had was that we weren’t close enough to the stage, which led to the sound not being loud enough for me, but gave me a valuable lesson “Always buy the ticket with the highest price!!”

pic courtesy: www.aeroforceone.com

Is an idle mind really a devil's workshop?

All these years I've just accepted the proverb "An idle mind is a devil's workshop" as something that was very obvious. I'm sure someone had explained the meaning of it to me at a very young age and I faintly remember it to be along the lines of "you should be working always and never be idle, cos being idle will lead you to think and do evil". Today my mind was pretty idle and which got me thinking about this thought-provoking .... well...thought. I realized pretty soon that this proverb is laced with contradictions of preposterous proportions. Did I just type that?? "contradictions of preposterous proportions"???? Oh well, moving on ... the first contradiction it that anything that is idle cannot possibly be in a workshop, at least not doing work in a workshop!! So just staying idle in a workshop, albeit the devil's is not really a problem is it?? The second problem I have with it is the mere insinuation that the devil's workshop is for idle minds. Isn't the devil's workshop usually the one where people are whipped and they are worked harder than they ever would possibly have been on earth, and the devil sits on his throne and checks the temperature of the oil boiling in different pots on his new, swanky corporate dashboard (the idea which btw was probably the suggestion of the consultants who landed up in hell and built by low cost offshore employees whose sin counts just missed the cutoff to the pearly gates). Getting back to the point, it's rather insulting to the devil don’t you think? Also, the fact the sheer generalization that step 1 (idle mind) means step2 (bad stuff) clearly shows the light with which the human race was held before the statement was made. I mean, maybe not an act of genius but something useful might just come out of an idle mind, say like while idly meandering through a garden, some innocuous concept called gravity might be discovered!! Or why go so far back for genius? Take this blog for example, came out of an idle mind!!!!

Now that I've managed to introduce this blog, I really do not need to blabber on about the idle/devil concept anymore. I hereby welcome myself to this new world!! This blog will inspire its readers, make them think twice about opinions they had formed over years and years, make them question their inner soul, connect with a world they never thought existed...YES!!! This blog will do that....hmmm..on second thought...crap it... I'm gonna write about sports, movies, travel, entertainment and fun...and what i like and dislike about all that!!! woohooooo...here goes nothing....
